Georgia requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Georgia requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

Georgia Teen Driving Laws

Georgia operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: Instructional Permit, Provisional Driver's License (Class D), and Class C License.

  • Instructional Permit: At 15, teens can obtain an instructional permit after passing a written exam. An instructional permit allows teens to drive with a parent, legal guardian, licensed driver over 21, or a certified driving instructor.
  • Provisional Driver's License (Class D): Teen drivers can obtain a Class D Provisional license after holding an instructional permit for 1 year and 1 day and after meeting all Joshua's Law requirements. With a Class D Provisional License, teens cannot drive between midnight and 6:00 AM.
  • Class C License: At 18, drivers may obtain an unrestricted Class C license, provided that the driver had no traffic violations during the previous 12 months.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in Georgia.
