Required Auto Insurance in Illinois

Illinois requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Illinois requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $20,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

Illinois Teen Driving Laws

Illinois operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three phases: Permit Phase, Initial Licensing Phase, and Full License Phase.

  • Permit Phase: At 15 Illinois teens may apply for their permit. After obtaining their permit, teen drivers must pass a vision and written exam. An instructional permit allows teens to fulfill their 50-hour driving practice requirement.
  • Initial License Phase: From 16-17, teen drivers can apply for their initial license after holding an instruction permit for 9 months and completing a driver's education course. For the first 12 months of licensing, the number of passengers is limited to one person under 20.
  • Full Driver's License: At 18, Illinois drivers may obtain their full license.

Please be aware of additional driving restrictions for teen drivers in Illinois.
