Required Auto Insurance in New Mexico

New Mexico requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. New Mexico requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $10,000 per accident.

New Mexico Teen Driving Laws

New Mexico operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: Learner's Permit, Provisional License, and Full License.

  • Learner's Permit: At 15, New Mexico teens may enroll in a driver's education course to receive their Learner's Permit once passing a knowledge exam. A Learner's Permit allows teens to drive with a parent, legal guardian, licensed driver over 21, or a certified driving instructor. Teens must complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 hours at night) to move to the next stage.
  • Provisional License: At 15 and a half, teen drivers may apply for their Provisional License after completing the required driving practice, completing driver's education, and passing a road skills test. With a Provisional License, teens cannot drive unsupervised between midnight and 5:00 AM.
  • Full License: After holding their Provisional License for a year, teens may apply for their Full License, provided that the driver had no traffic violations during the provisional period.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in New Mexico.
