Pennsylvania Auto Insurance Coverage

Home to the Philly cheesesteak and rich American history, there's a lot to love about Pennsylvania. But, whether you're new to the area or have deep roots in the Keystone State, it's important to understand the auto insurance requirements in Pennsylvania.

Required Auto Insurance in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. Pennsylvania requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $5,000 per accident.
  • Medical Benefits: $5,000 minimum.

Pennsylvania Teen Driving Laws

Pennsylvania operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: Learner's Permit, Junior License, and Full Unrestricted License.

  • Learner's Permit: At 16, Pennsylvania teens can obtain a Learner's Permit after passing a written exam. A Learner's Permit allows teens to drive with a parent, legal guardian, or licensed driver over 21. Teens must complete 65 hours of supervised driving practice (10 hours at night, 5 hours in poor weather conditions) before moving to the next stage.
  • Junior License: After six months, teen drivers may apply for their Junior License after completing the required driving practice and passing a road skills exam. With a Junior License, teens cannot drive unsupervised between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM.
  • Full Unrestricted License: At 18, or after holding a Junior License for a year, teens may apply for their Full Unrestricted License, provided that the driver has no traffic violations on their driving record.

Please be aware of additional restrictions for teen drivers in Pennsylvania.
